The 2007 gate is open!
Student Shorts FAQ
It is only natural to have a few questions about our festival, and some of these questions are asked frequently enough to be included in this list.

It's a good idea to check here before contacting us!

What is the minimum and maximum length allowed?

We accept films that are between 1 second and 25 minutes, including credits.

What genres do you accept?

Simply put, anything! We have awards for narrative, animation, documentary and experimental, but are open to any genre you can imagine.

When is the festival, and where is it held?

For 2008, the festival is being held at the Bloor Cinema in downtown Toronto, on September 26th and 27th
Check it out: Bloor Cinema

Who can enter?

Anyone (producer or director) who made the film while attending a post secondary institution anywhere in the world. Note: On your submission form you will be asked to identify the school that you attended when the film was made.

When are the deadlines?

There are actually 3 deadlines this year:
  • April 1st 2008
Early bird submission deadline. (only $15!)
  • June 1st 2008
Regular submission deadline. ($15 thru WAB/ $20 Hardcopy)
  • July 1st 2008
The, "I was reallllly busy in June!" deadline.
    ($20 thru WAB/ $25 Hardcopy)
How can I submit?

Submitting has never been easier! Simply click on the Entry Form button on the menu to the left.

You may submit either online through withoutabox.com and take advantage of our withoutabox discounts, or you may download a hard copy form and mail it to us. All the details are on the Entry Form page.

Do I have to be a film student to qualify?

Absolutely not! We understand that just because you are a Chemistry major, you are not a true filmmaker at heart! All we ask is that you actually attended a school when you made the film.

What formats are you screening on?

Understandably, people sometimes get screening copy mixed up with preview copy. The preview copy must be submitted on either VHS or DVD and is what the prescreeners watch to see if your film should be included in the festival.

The screening copy is what is actually shown at the theatre.
Supported Screening Formats:
  • 35mm single system (or silent)
  • 16mm single system (or silent)
  • Beta SP NTSC or PAL
  • Digital Beta NTSC or PAL
  • Mini DV NTSC or PAL
  • DVCAM NTSC or PAL
  • DVD (as a last resort only!!)
What kind of awards to you offer?

Ahh, the million dollar question. We have the good fortune to be very well sponsored when it comes to handing out awards to students. Although, the content of each award varies from year to year, we offer the following:
Student Shorts Award Categories
  • Best Canadian Narrative
  • Best Canadian Animation
  • Best Canadian Documentary
  • Best Canadian Experimental
  • Audience Choice Award (open to international films)

With the exception of the Audience Choice Award, the award-winners are decided upon by our jury, which also changes year to year.

Check out the awards page to see who won what recently!

In 2008, we are also working towards creating a Best International Film award! We will just have to see how our sponsorship drive turns out.

Where do I send my stuff?

Your preview copy, screening copy and submission materials (if you decide to submit via hardcopy) must all be sent to our office.

How do I submit more than one film?

You can submit as many films as you like, just treat each film as a separate entry.
